About Food Hero Tours

The tours are run by Julie Whalley, a Lancashire lass born, bred and trained into the hospitality industry. Alongside running her other business Buns of Bowland, she is also a developing new ambassador for local food, drink and tourism in the county. She has made it her business to get to know where her food comes from and is constantly adding to her list of suppliers. Julie by trade is a trained chef and hotel manager. She has also been a national award winning rural business advisor, a Food Northwest Award Judge, is a panel member on the award winning Ribble Valley Food Trail, the Chief Coordinator for the Ribble Valley Food Festival. Recently she appeared on BBC 2’s Michel Roux Juniors Service as a knowledgeable fine diner !

She has also worked as a hotel standards assessor and when she has time bakes Buns (not cupcakes!) for local coffee shops, farmers markets, birthdays and weddings.

The food and drink producers hosting the tours range in size from a recent start up poultry farmer supplying beautiful golden yolk eggs to a superb beef and lamb farmers supplying Waitrose and Morrisons. From delectable Lancashire cheese makers to a local social enterprise for the disadvantaged, producing vegetables and salad crops.

Throughout the tours every effort is made to ensure you have an enjoyable, informative day out, full of fun topped by a great lunch at one of the area’s best restaurants, hotels or cosy country pubs along the way.

The tours are supported by the tourist board, local councils, Business Link, Countryside and Landowners Association, National Farmers Union, as well as local Chambers of Trade, accommodation providers and eating establishments.

We all work together supporting the local rural economy – the backbone of Lancashire business.
